Integration

I haven't heard anything from you guys about what you would like me to cover in our session this Thursday, so please consider if you feel confident in your ability to
  1. Identify stretching & strengthening exercises and lifestyle modification for particular therapeutic ends
  2. Design a healthcare programme which includes therapeutic exercise, lifestyle modification and massage therapy
  3. Communicate this healthcare programme to your client & check understanding
  4. Monitor progress through the healthcare programme
...and give me some idea about the subjects that you need extra support for.

For our session this Thursday (1-3pm) , I'd like you to bring along the records for a client who you are currently working with, preferably one with a fairly interesting profile. I'm going to ask you to give us the following information.
  • Demographic profile
  • Occupation/recreation
  • Assessment data
  • Perhaps details of treatment and results, or perhaps not
We will then collaboboratively develop a healthcare programme for your client.

Pulling it all together

Over the next two weeks, we will pull together what you've learnt so far in Healthcare programming. The aim is that at the end of this period, you'll feel confident to
You should realise that your understanding of this topic does not just stop at the healthcare programming assessment. You will also be assessed on your ability to apply your knowledge to work with clients in the student massage clinic.

Weekly task

This week, think about what you would like me to clarify in our session next week, and talk about it through the course email group. I'll create a tutorial focussed on the needs of the group for the Thursday session.

The rest of the course.

The purpose of this post is to review what we've done so far, and where we are going with the course.

So far in Healthcare programming, we've investigated
  • General principles
  • Injuries & how these affect Healthcare programming
  • Stretching exercises
We have a break from content in this course now for a few weeks. In the week following the next block, we will start looking at the theory behind the use of strength training and balance exercises. Then on the 28th of April you will be investigating these types of therapeutic exercise in the classroom.

We expect that by this stage you should be incorporating these types of exercises into your clients treatment programmes.

In the week starting the 25th of May, we will have a look at some ideas around client motivation & compliance, then following that the class work will be based around supporting your development of healthcare programmes with your clients & completing the assessment.

Assessment
For future reference, the assessment has now been posted to the course page, and is also available here.
The assessment schedule is in excel format. If you can't open it, email David, and he'll email you back a pdf version.

Introduction to healthcare programming

Introduction

The aim of this course is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to design effective healthcare programmes to support client recovery.

The course page is here.

This week

This week, I just want you to get started with some readings, and exploration.

  1. If you haven't already, get the text - Houglum

  2. Read Rehabilitation Principles, Objectives and Goals (p. 13-17) and take notes about the key points

  3. Read Basic Components of Therapeutic Exercise (p. 21-23) and take notes

  4. Read Psychological Considerations (p. 23-26) and take notes

  5. Visit ExRx on the web & bookmark it. Have a look around. It's an excellent resource for exercise prescription.

  6. Have a look around the web to see if there are any other good sources of information on exercise prescription (if they're really good you could even consider subscribing to them in Google reader).

Next week we'll get into something a bit more meaty - the injury healing process, and how this interacts with exercise prescription.
